Description

Connections Block: ENG 228-B002 Literature of the Arab World & HIS 263-B002 History of the Middle East.

In this block students explore the culture and history of the Middle East, and especially Arab Literature. The courses cover the rise of Islam and its affect on the culture of the Middle East, the nature of Western involvement in the region, and the roots of current conflicts in the area. Students also get a solid grounding in the ways that Islam shapes modern gender roles, conceptions of community and society, and governmental structures. Special attention is given to the role that oil has played in the region's history and power politics.
